We have done some traditional breeding by crossing selected cultivars/varieties. However, our primary “breeding” is by selection. We observe a plant or plants with superior or unusual characteristics and we isolate the plant(s). We then propagate them to determine if the new traits are hereditary when propagation is via seed. We likewise propagate by runners is possible and observe whether the traits persist in all new plants.
As an example, recently we noticed an alpine strawberry Pineapple CrushTM with large fruit on a relatively small plant in a 5″ pot. We have set this plant aside and will propagate via seed to start the selection process. Here’s a couple of pictures of this plant with the large berry.
